Description This is a fascinating Jewish softcover Mahzor, which is not only full of history and emotion it is also a book full of information which reminds me more of an almanac then a prayer book, which it really is. Very rare and unique. This Mahzor has a very long and variegated history with many twists and turns which I will promptly explain in a cursory fashion. Originally this was published by a member of the Algerian Jewish community in memory of his daughter who passed away very young, but was extremely passionate and active about her Jewish faith. the father writes very emotionally about how she participated in the Pessach Seder and all other Jewish celebrations. The name of the father was Daniel Renassia and in the early pages he writes in French how it was printed in memory of his 'small child' named Reine Milka Renassia. 'A la memoire de ma fille cherie'. The Ohr Thora Synagogue seems to have been already established earlier in Algeria, even before the pieds noirs Jews from there came to France and established a synagogue with he same name in 1962 (Detailed below). This finished product was then published in 1970 by Daniel Renassia (Or Genassia) in memory of his parents Rabbi Yosef Ben Dovid Renassia, Chief Rabbi in Algeria (Constantine) and his wife Rose. 'Who dedicated their souls for the love of Torah, Love of their Jewish brethern, and the love of the land of Israel'. He seems to have incorporated a previous prayer book called Birkat Ha-Hayim which was published in 1948 (Originally only 148 pages). This book is a very important book about the history and preservation of Jewish-Arabic culture and the land of Israel which is very central to it. Specifically for Algerian-French Jews. It was made for Sefardic Jews coming to the Holy Land or not yet ready to come to the Holy Land but are living or are from Israel in the Arab lands surrounding Israel. This was published for people who were familiar with reading Arabic and especially with Hebrew characters and were also well versed in French, for example for Algerian or Morrocan Jews.
But more specifically, it was printed for children who would complain that they 'do not have a proper machzor to pray from', as this was seen as a proper memorial for the original author's daughter. It is called Machzor Kattan Yom Kippour Or Thora. The front cover reads: Contes choisis du Talmud et du Midrache. The rear cover says: 'Reine Milka Mithpalleleth Reine Milka Prie, Du jour du Kippour Pizmonimes et Selihoth Toutes Les prieres f'indulgences bircath hah'aime benedictions souhaits des vivants. Or Thora 5 Iyar 5730 - 11 Mai 1970. Jour De La Atsmaouth. It has a lot of French translation and Judeo-Arabic including 'The Targum of Kol Nidrei' in French and Arabic with Hebrew letters. Pagination going from front cover, right to left: 15p, 11p, 27p, 280p, 14p. Additionally, 43 pages when read from rear cover going left to right all in French from an extensive exposition on the day of Yom Kippour by Or Thora from Mai 8 1954, the 6th anniversary of Yom Ha'atzmaut. Full of fascinating instructions, articles, major Jewish events, calendars, translations, schedules, photos, and illustrations. Rare.
