Pentateuch Samson Raphael Hirsch Chumash Bible Jewish Commentary 6v Fair Cond.

  • $449.00

6 Volume set, Pentateuch with the legendary translation and commentary of Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, 19th century German Rabbi.
The original was of course written in German and this set is the widely respected translation to English by Isaac Levy.
The rendering of Isaac Levy is the best representation of the original German and intent of Samson Raphael Hirsch, it is also, I suspect, less biased towards a certain religious/world/philosophical view on the part of the translator, but it rather adheres quite closely to fidelity of transference.

Set includes: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus I, Leviticus II, Numbers, Deuteronomy. This is a must for critical Bible Study of the Old Testament and even a help when comparing to the New Testament.

This is the large set printed from 1960-66 except Exodus which was printed in 1956.

This set is graded 6/10 according to my grading scale for books, keep in mind that part of what I consider in grading is what is available and typical at the time of listing for the specific book I am grading. So as far as these large volumes of the Hirsch Chumash set are concerned. It is fairly difficult to find good quality volumes. This set up for sale has some volumes with yellowing pages. This is in better then average condition found for this set and still acceptable for study as these are difficult to find in 5/10 or above. Some volumes have library cards and/or stamps in them or on the side. One of the Leviticus volumes had owners stamps on all three edge sides and it has been blotted out with black marker. Some have inscriptions of previous owner. Solid for study, owners writing on front blank pages but no writing in the interior, cover edges frayed and/or torn in places as shown in pictures.

Samson Raphael Hirsch (June 20, 1808 – December 31, 1888) was a German rabbi best known as the intellectual founder of the Torah im Derech Eretz school of contemporary Orthodox Judaism. Occasionally termed neo-Orthodoxy, his philosophy, together with that of Azriel Hildesheimer, has had a considerable influence on the development of Orthodox Judaism.[1] Hirsch was rabbi in Oldenburg, Emden, and was subsequently appointed chief rabbi of Moravia. From 1851 until his death, Hirsch led the secessionist Orthodox community in Frankfurt am Main. He wrote a number of influential books, and for a number of years published the monthly journal Jeschurun, in which he outlined his philosophy of Judaism. He was a vocal opponent of Reform Judaism and similarly opposed early forms of Conservative Judaism.A final area of his work, which has only recently been rediscovered, was his etymological analysis of the Hebrew language. Most of this work is contained in his Torah commentary, where he analyses and compares the shorashim (three-letter root forms) of a large number of Hebrew words and develops an etymological system of the Hebrew language. This approach is based on the idea that letters that share a phonetic similarity, have similar meaning. For example, the words Zohar (light), Tzohar (translucent window), and Tahor (purity) are related words because the letters Zayin, Tzadie, and Tet are phonetically similar. This is an approach used in many places by the renowned biblical commentator Rashi as well. Although this effort was, in his own words, "totally unscientific", it has led to the recent publication of an "etymological dictionary of the Hebrew language".[4] Although Hirsch does not mention his influences (apart from traditional Jewish sources), later authors have identified ideas from the Kuzari (Yehuda Halevi), Nahmanides and the Maharal of Prague in his works. Nevertheless, most of his ideas are original
